The Story

Established in 1884, the Forest Curling and Social Club have been dedicated to proving the public the best possible ice conditions and social environment at a reasonable cost for all area residents. With four sheets they strive to provide great casual and competitive curling opportunities to all ages and abilities through house leagues and bonspiels. The current club facilities and arena date from 1971. While the arena and ice equipment have been upgraded over the years, the club facility has not. In 2008 the members made a commitment to a capital upgrade of the building and two-phase plan was established to modernize the facility. A number of upgrades were identified and a pledge to its members and the community to raise funds was made.

Phase 1 of the modernization project included a complete barrier free renovation, inclusive of an enlargement of the downstairs lockers rooms, washrooms and viewing area, a new clubhouse roof, new energy efficient HVAC systems and on-ice lighting to bring the facility up to today’s standards in several aspects. Our foundation participated in Phase 2 of the project, by providing a $100,000 donation. With our donation, as well as donations from many other like-minded members of the club and community, the club was able to build a 19’ by 40’ two-level addition which provided amenities including a new barrier-free washroom on the upper level, installation of an elevator to provide access to the second floor lounge and the ice area,  a new modern kitchen on the second floor, barrier-free ice viewing areas. The addition also provides space for a proper entrance way, storage and an office for the club manager on the ground floor.

Project Status

Both phases of the capital modernization project are complete and functional. The club and community are thrilled with their newly renovated facility and are positioned nicely for membership growth.
